A happy anniversary to Grant Broadcasters’ head of tech John Sandles

Everyone in radio knows the value of a great tech, and Grant Broadcasters‘ Head of Technology John Sandles is exactly that, celebrating an audio-versary today, January 13.
John said:
“Today marks 35 years for me in commercial radio and also continuously looking after engineering for one or both of the Geelong radio stations for that entire period in a number of roles.
When I started at 3GL, in January 1990, music was still played to air from turntable, carts and CDs. There were no windows computers, no Internet and no mobile phones. The newsroom used typewriters and telex machines, and there were only 2 computers in the entire building (music and traffic scheduling) running an early DOS operating system.”
My first job was to build the ‘new’ FM transmitter site for 95.5 which launched on Jan 27th 1990 as K-Rock, and as a result, 3GL AM was switched off in Feb 1990 (in a touch of irony, I was also there when 3GL was switched back on last year – 34 years later!).”
“I moved to Bay-FM in 1992, built new studios and rebuilt the transmitter site, then in 1995 Bay-FM and K-Rock merged under Grant Broadcasters ownership.”
“It was a very different world (and a different radio world) back in the early 1990’s, and I’m honoured to have met and worked with some amazing people over the many years, and pleased to be now back with Grant Broadcasters.
The pictures are of my early years at K-Rock and Bay-FM (the 1990’s were not kind to me with either fashion or hair style..!”
With thanks to David Rogerson for sharing this milestone, and John’s photos, memories and hairstyles.
