ABC Ombudsman sees a reduction in complaints, war in the Middle East the most complained about subject

The ABC Ombudsman has released its 12 month report, from July 2024 to June 2025 which aims to ensure reasonable concerns and complaints are heard across the organisation.

Overall complaints were down 26% on last year, war and conflict in the Middle East was the most complained about subject and News Online the most complained about platform.

50% of News Online complaints were allegations of bias, 41% were claims of inaccuracy and more than a third (36%) were in relation to the Middle East conflicts.

While most investigations (84%) found no breach of editorial standards, 412 (14%) issues were resolved. More details on the 2% of investigated issues found to be in breach and that ABC editorial standards had not been met can be found here.

Complaints about coverage of the middle east and other international conflicts, trans gender, and the federal election, were the dominant themes of the last year. The ABC is aware that artificial intelligence can assist now in complaint campaigns with the Ombudsman working to identify reasonable and considered complaints to ensure the ABC reflects, adapts and improves the services it provides in support of a vibrant and healthy democracy.
