ABC raises over $500,000 for Syria

ABC Radio around Australia has come together to raise over $500,000 for Refugees impacted by the bloody Syrian civil war.
 
The Appeal was broadcast on ABC Local Radio around Australia on Sunday October 20 and simulcast on Radio National. On Tuesday October 22, triple j dedicated their breakfast show to the Appeal, with hosts Tom & Alex conducting “dares” suggested by the audience, in return for donations.
 
In a media release, Ian Mannix, ABC Manager Emergency Broadcasting and Community Development said: “As with previous ABC Appeals for East African famine relief and the Pakistan flood crisis, ABC audiences have demonstrated their capacity for support and have given generously to those Syrian Refugees in desperate need of food, water, shelter and health care.”
 
The Syrian civil war  has generated a refugee crisis of a size not seen since the Rwandan genocide in the 1990’s. Money raised by the ABC Appeal will be used to aid  the over 2 million Syrian people living in refugee centres in the Syrian region.
