ABC shows off new Parramatta studios for SMPTE members

The ABC welcomed SMPTE members to an exclusive tour of it’s new all-IP production facility at Parramatta last month.

The event, hosted by the ABC Product & Technology team saw around 50 SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) Oceania members and friends view ABC’s state-of-the-art radio studios and produc tion areas, AR/VR capable television studios and editing facilities.

“The studios were formally opened in February, but this is the first time industry stakeholders have seen up-close the ABC’s IP-based studios which create new opportunities to produce, manage and distribute our content,” said Joe Sexton, head of Content Production Technology.

“Events like this support community engagement and knowledge sharing among industry professionals involved in developing technical standards and engineering guidelines for broadcast,” said Joe.

During the evening, attendees were welcomed by Paul Whybrow SMPTE Oceania Chair and provided with an overview by members of ABC Product & Technology who worked on the project.

Studio tours focused on the implementation of SMPTE 2110 standard and supporting Network topology, with industry standards underpinning the success of this project for the ABC.

“The SMPTE standards are core for how we integrated numerous systems from various manufacturers within the same SMPTE 2110 ecosystem,” said Joe. “This architecture provided the ABC’s Product & Technology teams flexibility in design and deployment, as well as the best way to support our content creators as they find new ways to engage with audiences.”

Paul Whybrow said it is good for members to see the application of published standards in a high-profile production environment.

“I was very impressed with the insights they gave to this very innovative technology being adopted by the ABC in its brand-new Parramatta site,” Paul said. “We really appreciate the ability of our members to be welcomed by the ABC given our passion to educate our members with the latest industry advances. Thank you for the great hospitality.”

Following the tour, attendees were treated to a demonstration of the advanced graphics capabilities in Studio 91 after the 7pm NSW News.

ABC Parramatta Studios is the ABC’s first site where all audio, video, and data signals are produced, managed and distributed over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, rather than traditional broadcast infrastructure. The key strategic advantages include multi-platform publishing, converged workflows, collaboration and remote production, ability to add new channels and formats easily, data driven analytics, and audience targeting.

SMPTE is a global society of more than 5000 diverse and engaged members, including creative professionals, media technologists, and engineers. This week SMPTE is hosting the MetExpo event in Sydney.
