ABC Tasmanian signal clearly better

ABC Radio started its new FM local radio service for northern Tasmania yesterday.

After 70 years with the erratic 711AM service, Launceston and northern Tasmania can now enjoy the strongest FM service heard anywhere in Australia on the new 91.7 ABC Northern Tasmania from a high-power stereo FM service broadcast from Mt Barrow.

The 711AM service will be turned off after March 26, so listeners will need to retune to 91.7FM by that date.

After years of working towards this goal it was appropriate that the Regional Program Director for ABC Northern Tasmania, Michael Merrington joined with the Federal Member for Bass, Michael Ferguson in unveiling the plaque. (see photo)
