Adnan Syed of the Serial podcast has had all charges dismissed by prosecutors after serving over twenty years in prison for the 1999 murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee.
Syed has always maintained his innocence.
The names and stories of Syed and Lee became nationally known when Serial was released in 2014.
The 41-year-old had his murder conviction overturned last month after it was found that authorities hid exculpatory evidence from Syed’s defence.
Syed will now be free to enter society again as investigators explore new leads, but Lee’s family attorney is appealing the decision to release him.
Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby’s office said, “two alternative suspects are being developed.”
The integrity of Syed’s conviction was brought into question by the Serial podcast, as well as the follow-up podcast, Undisclosed, which was developed by Rabia Chaudry, who has also written a book on Syed’s case called Adnan’s Story: The Search for Truth and Justice After Serial.
