AFTRS offers more courses in Radio

Enrolments are now open in voice and presntation plus new courses offered for the first time. 

AFTRS Open have a series of intensive weekend radio short courses in the coming months at AFTRS in Sydney. 

Highlights include two new courses offered for the first time: Advanced Voice Over and Radio Packages with award winning radio journalist Martin Corben.

 Voice Over

Industry experts Gaby Brown (triple J) and Simon Harvey will show you the techniques to get the best out of your voice and to get a start in the very busy voice over industry. This two-day intensive course features practical exercises in the AFTRS state-of-the-art Radio studios. 

You’ll learn how to use correct vocal and microphone techniques, mark up a standard commercial script, rework a script to accommodate change in style, time or grammar and much more.

Radio Packages

Producing short mini documentaries or ‘radio packages’ using sound alone is a creative storytelling challenge with great rewards. In this new two day intensive course you will learn how to make a ‘radio package’ with award winning radio journalist and presenter Martin Corben.

Mr Corben joined ABC Radio in 1990 working there until 2011 as a reporter, producer, presenter, cross media producer and Content Director at 702 ABC Sydney and ABC North Coast

This practical course will cover topics such as story telling ideas, how to plan a story, interviewing and writing techniques and basic editing and multi-track mixing. At the end of Day 2, you will produce a 3 minute package to play back to your class.

Advanced Voice Over

Take the next step. The Advanced Voice Over Weekend is a two day intensive and practical course aimed at building on the skills developed in the AFTRS Open Voice Over course or for those with some experience with professional voice over work to further polish their skills. 

This intensive will cover commercial scripts for radio and TV, jingle singing, Radio/TV Imaging and developing characters. 

A small group (maximum 6) and a focus on performance will allow for more on-mic time to work on strengths and weaknesses. The course also provides opportunity to identify an area of specialisation during practical sessions. At the end of the course you will receive a number of work parts that could form the basis of a demo tape.

Announcing and Presentation

On air Radio industry professionals Gaby Brown (triple j, KIIS 1065 FM, WSFM) and Melanie Withnall (2UE, 2SER FM) will guide you in this inspiring two day workshop through a series of lectures and practical exercises, where you’ll have the opportunity to refine your skills in live presentation, announcing and script reading and general voice. You’ll also become more aware of the use of professional on air studio equipment and have a more detailed understanding and perspective of broadcast law.
