AFTRS students on show on ICE

Fresh from a successful Digital Radio OB at SMPTE, the students of the AFTRS Graduate Diploma in Commercial Radio Broadcasting are continuing to broadcast their latest station on the internet and in Sydney.

The youth formatted station, called ICE, will be heard on Sydney Western Suburbs FM frequency 100.7 thanks to the support of community station WOW FM, and can also be heard on the internet.

New features of the broadcast this year include an SMS interactive messaging system provided to AFTRS by Graham Knowles at Media Made to Measure and a major competition prize – a Playstation 2 and Eye-Toy camera. Both innovations are the result of promotions arranged by this year’s students.

AFTRS Head of Radio Steve Ahern said: “This is their last major exercise before work attachment and graduation, so this is the time Program Directors usually listen in to decide if they are interested in hiring any of the students when they graduate in early September.”

The students have all taken on specific roles within the station to prepare them for their jobs in the real world of commercial radio.

Production Manager Brendon Boss sent radioinfo a sample of one of the launch promos that have been made for ICE. He said: “We wanted our production values to reflect a sense of fun and to be cool and a bit cynical, so we made this one from an idea we got off the internet and adapted it to what we wanted to achieve on our station.”
