Aids drug cost increase overturned after Joy 94.9 coverage

Concerns that a Melbourne sexual health clinic was charging for HIV medications were overturned this week after the intervention of Joy 94.9.

Victorian Health Minister David Davis  intervened to stop The Alfred Hospital charging dispensing fees for HIV/AIDS medication, less than four hours after the issue went public on community radio Joy 94.9 yesterday.

SameSame newsletter reports that previously medication had been provided free to those with limited funds, but clients at the Melbourne Sexual Health Clinic had recently been told they should expect to make a co-payment in the future of up to $200 per month.

Joy 94.9 made calls to The Alfred and various health officials after the issue was raised by Dean Beck’s LGBTI current affairs program On The Line yesterday.

Within hours of the calls, a ministerial intervention was confirmed, reversing the hospital’s decision.

This is the secind example in the same week where Melbourne media have been responsible for overturning poor government decisions, with 3AW’s Neil Mitchell spearheading the reversal of speed camera fines.
