The April Fool’s Prank played on radio everywhere

The joke was on radio’s weekday breakfast funsters this year as April Fool’s Day fell on a Saturday.

This meant that many of those determined to celebrate “the day” all shared a gag which was sure to fool their listeners when they least expected it: one day early.

But Nova’s 106.9 in Brisbane already has a weekly show called “Thank God It’s Thaiday” broadcast on Saturdays with Sam Thaiday, Kimberley Busteed and Katie Mattin. For those who don’t know, Sam Thaiday is a treasured son of the Brisbane Broncos NRL team.

So, already blessed with Friday’s homophone on a Saturday, Sam proceeded to tell his legion of horrified fans he was leaving the Broncos to play in the NFL in America. The phone lines were jammed and some listeners weren’t happy until he revealed it was a gag at the end of the show.

If you missed April Fool’s Day entirely you can catch up here in An updated (and depressing) list of all the April Fools’ pranks on the Internet from the Washington Post.
