ARN Group P.D. explains The Edge 96.1 not playing rap

Following our story on Western Sydney regional The Edge 96.1 moving to a Hip Hop/R’n’B format regardless of denials in late November last year of any significant programming changes coming up, ARN Group P.D. Jeremy Millar has told radioinfo: “It’s “Hip Hop and R ‘n B” which is a much broader collection of sounds and styles than Rap.”

(radioinfo’s headline said “Surprise! The Edge goes rap”)

“I stand by my comments that this is not a major change and that it’s simply part of the natural evolution of the station, as Hip Hop and R ‘n B are substantial influences on CHR at the moment (and have been for some time), so those styles on the playlist have been up weighted.”

“The Edge remains based in a CHR style of radio, but with more emphasis on Hip Hop and R ‘n B components of contemporary hit music.”

On 30 November last year radioinfo predicted there was a possibility the station would go more youth focused with an urban and hip hop format.
