BBC’s Terry Wogan gets knighthood

BBC RADIO 2 morning host Terry Wogan has been knighted by Queen Elizabeth.

The Irish-born Terry Wogan, now “Sir Terry” was originally tipped to receive only an honorary knighthood but was granted a full knighthood when he changed to dual Irish-British citizenship and he may now use the “Sir” title.

After the ceremony he revealed the Queen listens to his morning radio show.

Wogan joked: “Her Majesty said she had been listening to the programme. She is one of Terry’s Old Geezers (TOGs), although anybody who had the nerve to call her that would be very, very foolish indeed.”

TOGs is an affectionate term used to describe Wogan’s more elderly listeners.

Wogan, who has been a staple on radio and television for four decades, said he was greatly honoured by the knighthood.
