triple j Unearthed has selected NSW duo BESTIES as the winner for 2022’s DIY Supergroup competition after whittling down the entries to five finalists.
The newly minted pair combined for an angst-ridden ‘two bedroom apartment’.
triple j Unearthed’s Executive ProducerTommy Faith says ,“When we came across this entry from BESTIES in the moderating queue we knew straight away that it was going to be a track we’d come back to. Amalgamating elements of hip-hop, drum’n’bass, post-hardcore and an enormous emo chorus all glued together by DIY Supergroup samples. Holly Humberstone’s vocals are so cleverly used. BESTIES are one to watch for sure.”
The DIY Supergroup sample pack included vocals, instrumentals, riffs, beats and bars from some big international artists like BBNO$, Holly Humberstone, Pup, renforshort, Superorganism and Porter Robinson.
BESTIES took the Holly Humberstone vocals and flipped it into a punk track that blew the judges away, complete with one of this year’s most daring switch-ups.
The other DIY Supergroup finalists Awa Mbaye, Dubbel Drop, Jack Grey and Stocker whose entries were top tier.
