Brian White Scholarship finalists announced

Commercial Radio Australia has announced the finalists for the 2020 Brian White Scholarship.

The scholarship provides one talented student with the opportunity to kick start their journalism career and gain experience in Australia’s biggest radio newsrooms.

The finalists come from six different universities in New South Wales and Western Australia.  They are:

  • Dona Sirimanne (University of Sydney, NSW)
  • Madeline Goldberger (University of Sydney, NSW)
  • Blake Mannes (Macleay College, NSW)
  • Zac de Silva (Macquarie University, NSW)
  • Keely Johnson (University of Newcastle, NSW)
  • Tara Hayes (University of Technology, NSW)
  • Matthew Sullivan (University of Technology, NSW)
  • Toni Ambrogetti (University of Technology, NSW)
  • Liam Kennedy (University of Technology, NSW)
  • Anne Naylor (Edith Cowan University, WA)
  • Sam McManus (Edith Cowan University, WA)
  • Genevieve Lamond (Edith Cowan University, WA)

As part of the selection process, the finalists will attend a one-day workshop in late 2020, where they will participate in newsroom tasks and gain feedback from commercial radio news directors Deborah Clay (ARN), Michelle Stephenson (NOVA Entertainment), Erin Maher (Nine Radio) and Natasha Jobson (SCA).

From there, one winner will be selected to receive an eight-week paid internship in 2021, working across Nine Radio, SCA, ARN and Nova in either Sydney or Melbourne, with travel and accommodation included if they live outside these cities.

Despite the challenges presented by COVID-19, we felt it was important for the Brian White Scholarship to go ahead, as part of the industry’s commitment to developing new talent,” says CRA’s Joan Warner. “Good journalism is more important than ever and this is a way to support young people in finding their foothold in broadcast news.”

The scholarship is named after legendary radio broadcaster Brian White, who covered wars in Vietnam and the Middle East, authored a book on politics and the media, served as general manager of 3AW in Melbourne and chaired the Fitzroy Football Club.

This is the fourth year that the scholarship has been facilitated by the commercial radio industry.

Previous recipients of the scholarship are Kamin Gock from Charles Sturt University, Rachel Storer from Newcastle University and Tom Durkin from Edith Cowan University.
