Capital in London Loses Big Audience

Capital Radio’s flagship station in London has lost 1.3% audience share in three months in the latest ratings, which translates to a loss of 200 000 listeners.

It is the first significant period covered by the Rajar measurement service since Johnny Vaughan took over the breakfast show on London’s 95.8 Capital FM.

The latest figures, for the second quarter of 2004, reveal an audience share fall to 6.6% of the overall market, a slump of more than 2.5% on the same period last year.

The Vaughan breakfast program, which started three weeks into the survey, has seen weekly reach tumble by 180 000 listeners to just under 1.2 million.

Capital is only 180 000 listeners ahead of arch rival, Heart 106.2FM, which has added 130 000 listeners since the first quarter and is only 0.1% behind Capital.

Other winners in London include Kiss 100FM and Magic 105.4, which have increased audience reach by around 80 000 and are neck and neck in overall share with 4.7% and 4.6% respectively.
