Changes at the top at AFTRS have familiar faces

The Australian Film Television and Radio School is continuing to roll out its new structure, with leadership roles in Radio redefined and strengthened to reflect the importance of the ‘R’ in the teaching institution’s name.

Former Head of Radio Lisa Sweeney (right in main image) and former senior lecturer Fyona Smith have both been with AFTRS since 2011 and 2012 respectively. Their renamed and refocused roles will now serve both industry and students more effectively.

Lisa has been appointed Program Leader Radio and Fyona moves up to Head of Radio.

Lisa Sweeney has worked across both commercial and public broadcasting for many years and has substantial professional radio experience. She served as the Head of Local Coverage (News and Current Affairs) at the ABC and many other senior executive roles managing radio stations and programs.

She has been a Producer and Presenter at Radio 2UE; a comedy performer and has also written fiction. During her time at AFTRS, Lisa has been the Head of Radio, and the Lead Trainer for the Railways Voice Announcement Project.

Fyona Smith has been appointed in a newly structured Head of Radio role. Her extensive experience means she is well prepared to take on the leadership of courses and liaison with our more than 50 guest lecturers from industry.

AFTRS Director of Award Courses Martin Brown says Fyona joined AFTRS following almost two decades in the commercial radio industry.

“Her areas of expertise include digital content, announcing, music programming, studio operation, editing audio and visual content and a wide range of current, industry standard programs used for producing radio on air and online,” says Mr Brown.

“Fyona’s professional ability has been recognised in the industry, being nominated for and winning many awards and in 2009 she was awarded Best Music Presenter, Best Music Director and Best Music Special (Provincial) at the Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAS).”
