Coleman sacked from Heart London Breakfast

Jonathan Coleman, presenter of ‘My Generation’ on ARN classic hits’ stations including WSFM, has been sacked as breakfast announcer by Heart FM in London.

According to a report in The Guardian, Coleman is being replaced on the Chrysalis station after six years by former BBC children’s presenter, Jamie Theakston.

Chrysalis says it has appointed Theakston ‘as its latest weapon in the fight to become London’s #1 station’ and is pitching him directly at Capital Radio’s breakfast host, Johnny Vaughan.

Coleman’s shock departure follows disappointing results in the latest ratings in which Heart has lost second place in London to Emap’s Magic.

Chrysalis issued its third profit warning in five months after shares fell almost 10% after the survey results.

Heart Managing Director, Steve Parkinson, says” “Jamie Theakston hails the beginning of an exciting next chapter for Heart 106.2, and this move presents a real opportunity for us to create a market leading breakfast show and station.

“Jamie is an established personality, who has been a part of many of our listeners’ lives for a long time.”

Theakston says: “I can’t wait to get stuck in – it will great to be on Heart 106.2 and great to be back in radio.”

The launch of Theakston’s new show at Easter will be supported by a strong marketing campaign across various media.

Theakston, 34, has been signed on a multi-year contract, and will present the weekday breakfast show with Harriet Scott, who has signed a new two year deal with Heart.

Coleman’s breakfast show contract is not being renewed after six years. He will present the show for another six weeks.

Chrysalis says it is talking to him about other projects within the group, but he does not have a new slot on its flagship London radio station.

The shock news might hasten a possible Australian return for the self proclaimed ‘Rotunda from Downunder’ and former WSFM copy boy – after 15 years away.

On his appointment as My Generation presenter in Australia, 48 year old Coleman said his ‘heart belongs in Australia and he wants to bring his family back to live in two or three years’.

“I look at this new show as part of my retirement scheme. The more things I do back in Australia, the more I pave the way for the Bob Rogers’ contract when I’m in my 70s!”

Despite his long absence, many would still remember Coleman as one half of the top rating Jono and Danno show with Ian Rogerson on triple j and then Triple M.
