Community radio stations unite for National Day of Mourning

Community radio stations Australia-wide will tonight observe a minute’s silence as part of a National Day of Mourning for victims of the Bondi Beach terrorist attack.

The Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) says that at times like this, community broadcasting has an important role to play in strengthening connection and understanding.

“Community broadcasting is already a trusted source of local, independent, community focused media. It provides an alternative to the polarising narratives too often seen online and in the mainstream, where people are divided into ‘them’ and ‘us’ and resentment can take root.”

“In contrast, community broadcasters across the country offer a place for people from diverse backgrounds and with different interests to come together, share and connect. This work matters, especially now.”

CBAA says stations may wish to acknowledge this in a way that suits their community.

“With the help of Eastside Radio, a station based in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, we’ve put together audio you can use to acknowledge the Day of Mourning.”

“As we enter 2026, we thank you for continuing to serve your communities with care, respect and compassion.”

Stations will observe the National Day of Mourning this evening (Thursday 22 January), with a minute’s silence at 7:01pm AEDT.
