Community stations must focus on digital transition: Technorama Conference

The national Technorama conference is on next weekend, September 9-11, in Canberra. “Community stations’ need to focus on digital transition,” organiser Chris Deacon has told radioinfo. “There is a strong desire from community broadcasters to develop better technical skills in order to support station operations,” and the conference will help build these skills in non commercial broadcasters. The keynote speaker for the event is Austereo digital radio pioneer Des DeCean. To register, click here.

Deacon says there is a “significant lack of clarity for regional operators that makes technical planning a challenge,” referring to the unknown timescale for the roll out of digital radio in the regions and other spectrum planning issues in regional Australia. “Technorama has become a vital tool which helps regional stations unscramble their technical options, resourcing and training.”

Sponsored by the Community Broadcasting Foundation, Technorama will bring together delegates from regional and metropolitan Australia and commercial industry to discuss technology issues impacting stations’ operations. It will be held at the studios of ArtsSound.

With an unprecedented array of technological solutions becoming available, stations face critical choices in meeting their future needs. This has implications for station budgets, training, volunteer and management acceptance, as well as the complex integration of audio, RF, IT and project planning skills.

Technorama’s aim is to assist members of community stations in understanding how to combat these choices. The conferences brings technical, management and non-technical delegates together in an affordable and collaborative setting to solve problems.
