This year I was honoured with the Canadian Broadcasters Hall of Fame Award presented at the Radio Days North America conference. It felt great after 60 years in radio, media and music consulting to receive such a tribute. I began to think about what awards really mean to ones career and how you should handle what comes next.
Winning a prestigious award in your media career offers a unique opportunity to leverage that recognition and elevate your professional standing. Here are some key suggestions you should focus on after winning such an achievement.
Credibility and Expertise should be added to your industry award. Leverage your expertise. An award symbolizes recognition of your skill and knowledge. Position yourself as a ‘thought leader’ or expert in your field. You could write articles, give interviews, or speak at conferences to share your knowledge.
You need to showcase your credibility. Use the award as a badge of honor. Update your professional profiles (LinkedIn, website, portfolios) to reflect the achievement. Mention it in relevant conversations, especially when pitching for new projects or roles.
Add to your skills with professional growth and Innovation. Seek new challenges. Awards can open doors to more significant opportunities. Use your recognition to explore more creative or innovative projects, challenge yourself with new roles, or work with more influential teams. As we move through our media careers don’t plateau and stand still.
Innovate in your sector of the industry. Build on your success by pushing the boundaries of your work. Use the award as motivation to be at the forefront of media trends, techniques, or technologies, and continue to innovate in your career. There’s a huge opportunity to open some new doors such as AI. Networking and collaboration are two things that I’ve built my radio career around. This is the lifeblood of your career growth and future successes.
Expand your network. Winning an award can increase your visibility in the industry. Connect with other professionals who have won similar accolades, industry leaders, and key decision-makers. This can lead to potential collaborations, partnerships, and mentorship opportunities.
Collaborate on high-profile projects. Your award puts you in a position to work with top talent or high-profile brands. Use this opportunity to collaborate on projects that will further boost your career and portfolio.
Brand building for yourself. This is key to building a robust career. Use the award to elevate your personal brand. Develop a narrative around your achievement that reflects your values, vision, and expertise. Your personal brand should emphasize the qualities that led to your award—such as creativity, technical skill, storytelling, or innovation.
Media coverage. Take advantage of the publicity that comes with winning a major award. Seek out interviews, podcast features, or guest appearances in media outlets that cater to your industry or audience. Did you do an industry-wide press release on your award? You need to do that.
Mentorship and giving back is a must. A prestigious award often positions you as a role model in your industry. Use your platform to mentor aspiring professionals, offer guidance, and contribute to the development of the next generation of talent. I’ve always gotten more ideas from those just starting in the radio industry.
Give back to the industry. Share your experiences and knowledge by joining industry panels, judging other award competitions, or contributing to educational initiatives that support young talent. Humble confidence puts you in a much more accessible light.
Stay grounded. While the award is a tremendous honour, continue to work with humility and dedication. Your peers and colleagues will value your continued professionalism and willingness to learn and grow.
Build on momentum. Capitalise on your win without resting on your laurels. It’s essential to maintain consistency in your performance and push for further success in your career.
By focusing on these attributes, you can maximise the impact of your award and ensure that it serves as a stepping stone for future career growth and achievements in the media industry.
