Death of Radio Pioneer, Dolly Dyer

Australian radio and tv pioneer, Dolly Dyer has died after a stroke in a Queensland nursing home.

She was the sidekick to husband, Bob Dyer on the long running ‘Pick-a-Box’, which ran from 1957-’71.

Dolly died at Gympie on Christmas Day and was buried five days later in a private service on the Gold Coast.

She was a teenage Sydney Tivoli showgirl, Dolly Mack, during World War Two, who fell in love with a visiting American comedian.

They married, bought a home in Sydney, and, in 1948, produced Pick-a-Box on radio for eight years before it moved to tv.

Racking up 900 programs, BP Pick-a-Box was one of the best rating shows in Australia.

In 1971, they walked away from tv and retired in Queensland where Bob Dyer concentrated on his first love: fishing.

But, before they retired, they were given a special Gold Logie to mark their contribution to the industry over 15 years.

Bob Dyer died in 1984 and Dolly remained out of the spotlight, living for most of the time on the Gold Coast before moving to Gympie.
