Doja Cat wins triple j’s Hottest 100, records for Kylie Minogue, G Flip and Hilltop Hoods

Doja Cat‘s ‘Paint the Town Red’ has come out on top of the 2023 triple j Hottest 100, and there was also records broken by Australian acts Kylie Minogue, Hilltop Hoods and G Flip.

Doja Cat – Paint the Town Red

triple j music director Nick Findlay said of the ARIA chart topping No 1:

“When we first heard ‘Paint The Town Red’ back in August, there was little doubt that we’d see it appear at the pointy end of this year’s countdown. Over an iconic sample of Dionne Warwick’s ‘Walk On By’, ‘Paint The Town Red’ shows Doja Cat in her truest form: effortlessly shaking off the haters while flexing her uncanny ability at executing pure pop perfection.”

The countdown also featured:

  • G Flip at No 2 with ‘Worst Person Alive’ was their highest charting position, BUT with six other entries now holds the record for most in the 100 in one year
  • Kylie Minogue’s ‘Padam Padam’, at No 48, was the first time she’d featured in the Hottest 100 since ‘Did it Again’ in 1997. That’s 26 years between drinks and eight years more than previous record holders Slipknot
  • Hilltop Hoods extended their existing record for most entries across all countdowns to 24
  • 35 debut artists
  • 2.35 million votes
  • More than 50% Australian acts
  • Five songs were Unearthed by triple j. Four of those artists appeared twice

Triple j breakfast presenters Bryce and Concetta hosted the countdown which at times was a messy affair with artists they spoke to like G Flip, Budjerah and Dom Dolla listening and partying on the other side of the world. But it was clearly live and in the moment and there’s not enough of that anymore.

You can still go to the triple j website for a recap, stats, and a deep dive into the top four and if you still need more Hottest 100, next Saturday February 3, from 10am local time, Double J will bring back the Hottest 100 of 2003.
