Election ads blackout now on

The blackout period for political advertising begins at midnight tonight (Wednesday 6 October) and runs until the
end of polling at 6pm Saturday afternoon.

Radio and tv stations are not allowed to broadcast political ads or sponsorship announcements between now and Saturday, but, unfairly, newspapers have no such blackout.

This does not stop stations interviewing politicians or commenting on the election, it only applies to advertising and sponsorship.

At the end of the election period, stations are required to submit a log of advertising to the Australian Electoral Commission.
