End of an era

It’s the end of an era when the clock strikes 5 o’clock this afternoon Friday July 22nd.

For the first time in the entire history of Austereo and Southern Cross Austereo, there will no longer be a DeCean on the payroll.

Des DeCean was a founding member of the ‘Adelaide Stereo FM’ team in 1980 that established the then 5SSA FM. The company later became Austereo as it spread its wings outside of Adelaide, and the station became SAFM.

Des was the very first employee of the company in 1980  “subject to the approval of the yet to be appointed Manager.”

That manager was Paul Thompson.

Des’ son Shane DeCean joined the Austereo network in 1998 and has been a major contributor to the Adelaide Technology team for the last 18 years.

Des retired in 2009 from his role of Director of Technology for the Austereo Network.

Shane now moves on to a role with Grant Broadcasting as the Senior Technician for their Murray Bridge Radio stations. In addition he assumes responsibility for the other Grant Broadcasting stations spread throughout regional South Australia.

However, it would appear the dynasty of DeCean technicians will continue beyond SCA with Shane’s son Connor recently doing work experience with the technology team at Nova 919 and 5AA.
