End Looms for Doom and Gloom Groom

A Wollongong groom in waiting’s ‘worst nightmare’ is almost over, after ‘winning’ an i98FM promotion and spending a week handcuffed to his future mother in law!

Marty & Erica, i98FM’s breakfast duo, have taken the whole mother in law gag to an entirely new level with their ‘Doomed Groom’ competition.

For three weeks, the station interviewed three couples a day on air and allowed listeners to vote on their favourites.

The twist is the couples were a groom and his future mother in law!

Derek (Spud) Gray and future mother in law, Debbie Worland, have been voted the most popular ‘couple’, via almost 30 000 SMS hits.

They were declared winners at a live OB last Saturday morning from Wollongong Mall, but that is when the ‘fun’ really began.

Ever since, they have been handcuffed to each other and have had to complete a multutude of tasks each day, as set by i98FM and listeners.

At least twice every day, they have been taken to an extremely public location with a boom box and forced to perform Riverdance for the amusement of the crowd.

A cross dressing exercise and a ‘train ride from hell’ were also planned.

On Saturday night, Spud and Debbie (as pictured) had to sleep in the front window of the Wollongong Capt’ Snooze store. They did not get too much sleep, as there were listeners outside in the street until around 5am, pushing various body parts against the window and making some rather unusual requests of the couple.

Why on earth are they putting themselves through this? If they make it through the week of torture until 8.30 this morning during a special i98FM live OB breakfast program, the bride and groom win a wedding reception worth $10 000.

Debbie will win a beautiful mother in law’s outfit for the wedding, plus hair, make up and a total spa session for her trouble.
