Epic fail for Merrick’s world record beer stein attempt

Merrick Watts had an epic beer fail last night when attempting his ridiculous idea of setting a world record for carrying steins of beer at Löwenbräu Keller in Sydney’s The Rocks ahead of Oktoberfest.

Live on his Triple M radio show he lasted just a few feet out of the required 40 meters with 22 steins (49 kilos of beer).

Merrick stumbled, steins went crashing to the ground, and he was drenched in liquid gold. Like a true Aussie battler he grabbed a beer and sculled it as he did the walk of shame to the finish line.

The current record still stands at 21 steins by Oliver Struempfel from Germany.

Merrick told his audience the steins were “so much heavier than I thought it would be… Auf Wiedersehen!”

Löwenbräu Keller is a Triple M favourite watering hole and as the home of Oktoberfest in Australia, has been giving Sydneysiders a genuine Munich-style experience for the past 35 years.

From Saturday 22 September, guests will have the chance to bring out their dirndls and lederhosen, dance with the oom pah pah band, treat their tastebuds with traditional Oktoberfest dishes and sample a range of authentic Oktoberfestbiers from Munich.
