Fifi, Fev and Nick receive emotional update about Underdog Elijah

This morning on The Fox FM’s Fifi, Fev and Nick, the team received an emotional update about Elijah, one of the 14 children selected for their Underdogs: Basketball Edition with the opportunity on a grand stage created for kids overcoming obstacles like illness, bullying, and mental health struggles. Last Thursday was Elijah’s fourth attempt at a kidney transplant.

Fifi Box was brought to tears by the news from Elijah’s mum Jess that this time the transplant has been a success. Jess thanked Fifi, Fev & Nick saying:

“He feels courageous, he feels strong, he feels so important because you guys care so much about him. You check in on him.”

Fifi cried and said it was “one of the happiest moments” the team has had.

Jess: Some exciting news, Elijah had his fourth planned (kidney) transplant and it finally went ahead last Thursday. He received his new kidney, and it went better than the doctors could have ever expected!

Fifi: Oh, Jess! We are so happy for you! How is he doing?

Jess: He’s doing so amazing. He’s kicking goals every day. He’s reaching the new milestones, yesterday he got out of bed and went for a walk to the ward window. He’s a superstar!

Fev: Speaking about being a superstar, I was watching the Royal Melbourne Children’s Hospital appeal, and I saw little Elijah pop up in the Carlton rooms! And I was like, I think he goes for the Bulldogs though! (laughs)

Jess: He has touched so many people throughout his journey. But I don’t think you guys truly understand the positive impact that you’ve imprinted in his life. He feels courageous, he feels strong, he feels so important because you guys care so much about him. You check in on him.

Fifi: Oh, Jess!

Jess: He’s amazing. He’s inspiring.

Fifi: Jess… so are you… (crying) because as a Mum… that was four attempts at a kidney replacement and the thing is you know it’s going to happen … but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be successful. It has taken and he is thriving… it doesn’t always work out. We couldn’t be happier for you Jess, and your whole family. Give Elijah a big cuddle for us.
