First streaming station – debate continues

Following up comments back and forth on a story about the first radio station on the net, Scott Truman comes back again to press his case for netfm being the first internet streaming station.

Here is what he has to say:

I refer to the comments of Angus Mallone in his letter of 23rd January, 2003 to radioinfo where he claims that an organization called either red raw productions or red raw radio purportedly was the first Australian internet radio station.

Sorry to disappoint you Angus, but Red Raw Radio was, and I quote from their website ( which by the way is not www.redrawradio.com anymore, but, www.redroar.com )

RedRawRadio.com was formed by Steve Hodgson, Ralph Tucker and Peter Murphy in October 1999 to operate outside the bounds of current public radio formats. At RedRawRadio.com our shows are a maximum of 15 mins and fully controlled by the artist. We showcase Australia’s emerging talent gleaned from the famous Max Rowley Media Academy, Australia’s leading Announcing Academy.

NetFM, of course as the streaming community knows, net cast its first show on 13th November, 1998 and has been doing so continuously since. I was never that great at maths, but I reckon that’s about 11 months before Red Raw Radio.

Not only was NetFM the first to continuously stream as stated but it was the first net caster in Australia to be issued with an on-line web casting licence issued by APRA bearing license #1.

With regard to the “Radio will always be local… live and local. The Internet Fad for Radio and TV has been and gone. Even Doug Mulray would tell you that.”

I would suggest, Angus, that Doug and Hamish would, in-fact, disagree with that statement, as of course, do I. Our’s and I believe Doug’s listener base is growing quite nicely and shows no sign at all of dropping off, so I hardly think the claim it has “been and gone” is totally accurate.

And finally, as for the longest running claim, I still stick by that however, if Angus, or someone else can refute the claim for the longest running continuous net radio show, I’ll be happy to stand corrected.

I trust this clears up any misapprehensions anyone might be under.

Regards, Scott Truman.
