Hamish & Andy No 1, news podcast consumption continues to grow – Australian Podcast Ranker September

Hamish and Andy continue to reign on the Triton Australian Podcast Ranker with news and sports listening growing off the back of the end of AFL and NRL seasons. Monthly listeners of news podcasts cracked 5 million in September.

Sporting podcasts, SEN Breakfast moved into the top ten with Dan Does Footy right behind. Triple M’s AFL and NRL podcasts, Ben Fordham‘s 2GB catch up one, Whateley, The Howie Games and Backstage with Cooper and Matty Johns were all in the top 40 as well.

Commercial Radio and Audio (CRA) dived a little deeper into sports podcast listeners other podcast consumption.

Demos+ data showed AFL fans consume sports podcasts at 49.6%, but their other preferences reveal distinct cultural markers; history ranks second at 32%, followed by society & culture at 30.3%. NRL fans had different priorities, with sports at 37.7%, then music at 27.4% and technology at 25.3%.

Lizzie Young, the CEO of CRA said:

“The Podcast Ranker delivers what every advertiser needs: certainty. Verified data showing exactly who’s listening, what they care about, and how to reach them when they’re most receptive.”

Four of the top five remained the same this month, Hamish & Andy #1, ABC News Top Stories #2, Mamamia Out Loud #3 and Sky News Australia Update dropping from 4 to 5. Shameless, hosted by Michelle Andrews and Zara McDonald surged from 11th to No 4 with an extra 200K plus extra monthly listeners. Life Uncut, hosted by Brittany Hockley and Laura Byrne, remained steady at No 7. It was announced last week that the podcast and ARN iHeart will part ways at the end of this year and whatever Brittany and Laura’s decision is from here as to who hosts the podcasts, their listeners will follow.

With the wrapping up of the Mushroom cook trial, ABC has adapted its podcast to look at other unusual legal matters in Australia and rebranded the podcast to The Case of. It dropped out of the top 10 this month to land at No 22 as a result but still with a healthy 259K listeners.
