Hunt Sorry, but Apology Rejected

3AW’s high profile AFL caller, Rex Hunt, has apologised for describing an Aboriginal player as being “… as black as a dog”.

Collingwood’s Leon Davis has dismissed the apology, and Hunt says the player is considering legal action over the comment, which came during Friday night’s call of the Pies’ game against Essendon.

He said: “Tarrant’s no good. Neither is Leon … Neon Leon’s as black as a dog … the night is as black as a dog … I stuffed it up. I’ll have a rest. I knew it was going to happen … I said he was dark on his opponent. Aw, shut up,” Hunt said, clearly recognising the blunder.

Soon after, Hunt rejoined the call: “I’ll take it over here. Neon Leon, they need him to light up, but he hasn’t lit up tonight. That’s what I meant to say … it’s time I retired anyhow.”

He says he was referring to Davis’ mood on the field at the time.

Hunt says he rang Davis on Sunday to apologise, but he rejected the explanation, saying he would hold talks with club management.

The AFL caller has told Southern Cross Radio: “And I quote, he said ‘You can apologise til you’re blue in the face, but I don’t believe it was a slip of the tongue’. But, that’s OK and I accept that. I do some silly things in my life, but I’ll stand up and face them. There was never any intention to cause this furore.”

3AW bosses are supporting Hunt, with Program Director, Clark Forbes, saying it was clearly a slip of the tongue.

“Rex often says the night’s as black as a dog’s guts and he just got a bit confused.”

Hunt says he wanted Davis to understand it was part of his repertoire to talk about his dog’s black guts.

“What I said sounded terrible and that’s why I stopped in my tracks. I hope he plays the game of his life next week.”
