I am one of those annoying people who wake up happy most mornings: Hayley Marcom

Breakfast in Shepparton

She’s a morning person, he’s not. So how does that work when you’re doing a breakfast radio show together?

“I am one of those annoying people who wake up happy most mornings. Simon on the other hand usually takes an hour or two and a mug of coffee to get him going so I no doubt annoy him when I come in. But I believe a good mood rubs off on others around you so we are usually laughing and joking around before the show starts most mornings (that’s my goal),” says Hayley Morcom.

And does it work?

“…it helps that Hayley is way more energetic early on and the energy usually rubs off on me. Coffee also makes it work,” adds Simon Takla.

Hayley and Simon are 969Star FM’s breakfast team in Shepparton and have been on air together for just six months.

“When I first met Simon he didn’t exactly have the best organisational skills which frustrated me as I am the polar opposite (sorry Simon). But over time we have become one of the most organised on-air teams getting around! (I’m assuming as I’m not really sure how organised everyone else is) When we start brainstorming ideas Simon is now the first one to jump up and grab the whiteboard marker to jot it down so we don’t forget it because he knows I have to write everything down. Simon is also very understanding and we have developed great communication between the two of us over the past 6 months,” says Hayley.

That’s how things work behind the scenes and its stuff listeners would have no idea about (and rightly so – smoke and mirrors) but they should know about Simon’s secret talent.

“I can bend my second biggest toe, on my left foot in a perfect 90-degree angle.”

Here’s picture proof (left).

No point saying you have a talent if you can’t prove it.

What listeners wouldn’t know about Hayley is, as a child she was frightened of escalators. “Shopping centres were a nightmare for me! It’s because I once stood on one thinking my parents were behind me, the next thing I was at the top and they were nowhere to be seen. Oh and I thought the stairs were going to grab me and suck me into it… I kind of still have this fear come to think of it (just writing that made me nervous).”

So after six months on air together if Hayley was told it was up to her and Simon to save the human race would they have a baby together? “Haha, oh God what kind of question is this!? I guess if it was ONLY to save the human race… the future generations might look a little funny though.”

Simon seems to like the idea. “If the world ends while we’re in the studio together then I think the answer is yes, because in 9 months the world will be blessed with a super radio baby who hits the post every time, finds the best angles on local content, keeps it tight and bright and keeps every break under 2 minutes.”
