On KIIS 101.1 with Matt & Meshel this week a social experiment has been played out, exploring some very unique themes about loyalty, trust and entitlement.
To recap – on Tuesday, six people were locked in a jury room, with $10,000 on the table, and all they needed to do was reach a unanimous decision as to who got the lot, while the rest left with nothing. It was very much about ethics and trust, with these strangers effectively over the week (four mornings) only spending four hours together. Who would you give it too, and how would you decide?
Matt & Meshel’s 10 Grand Jury’s was watched through a live Facebook stream to see how they behaved and what tactics the jurors used to convince everyone else to award them the cash.
The six jurors were:
- Sharon – wants to create an educational platform to implement into primary schools to combat bullying.
- Summer – wants to pay off her university studies after being kicked out of home for coming out as a lesbian.
- Wendy – wants to travel home to the UK to see her dying father.
- Charlotte – wants to travel to Mexico to represent Australia in the world Triathlon games.
- Matthew – wants to buy a caravan to travel around Australia BUT says he will lie to win the cash, and has told the jury his home has just burnt down.
- Rodney – wants to spend the money on a dream wedding. His family have financially cut him off because he wants to marry a Muslim girl.
The jurors were locked in a Melbourne hotel for 23 hours a day, and returned to KIIS 101.1 for just one hour each morning to debate it out, plead their case, and reach a unanimous decision.
Each morning the one hour of deliberations became more heated as each juror started to plead their case and tear apart the claims made by others.
With the deadline looming at 8.30am this morning (at which point a listener to dial in was going to receive the $10k in the absence of a unanimous vote) Matt & Meshel returned to the room for one final vote. Summer who Matt had accused of being a bully (despite her desire to start an anti-bullying campaign) was adamant she would never ever vote for Matt.
One by on as the others voted for Matt and she was last, she said “I feel completely bullied and victimised, and it’s Sharon and I will vote for Matt.”
So Matthew, the one juror actually legitimately lying, has walked away with the $10k.
