Lost bet leaves Hughesy cold and wet

Hughesy had a rough morning on Nova 100 breakfast, honouring a bet with Hawthorn captain Luke Hodge by swimming over 300 metres in St Kilda Bay, where the water was just 9 degrees.

Hawthorn had knocked over Hughesy’s beloved Carlton last weekend, and Hughesy & Kate’s AFL expert, Collingwood’s Dale Thomas was tasked with finding a punishment for losing the wager. Listeners and several of Hughesy’s high profile mates made suggestions too, and eventually Hughesy chose to go with Jason Akermanis’ proposal – a bay swim – and the date was set.

Kate, Hodgey and the show’s producers cheered from the shore, as a cameraman paddled alongside Hughesy in a canoe, commentating on the breakfast host’s reactions for the entirety of the swim, during which Hughesy was wearing only a Hawthorn jersey and Speedos bearing Hodges’ name.

The Hawthorn captain has been a familiar face in recent weeks, and Hodgey was one of the first to congratulate him on his achievement.
