MC and Mel get the scoop on Kate’s pregnancy… and complaints: UPDATED

Kate Middleton has morning sickness. MC and Mel find out how she is coping, but ACMA gets complaints.

Today Network holiday night show hosts MC and Mel managed to score a scoop for their Summer 30 program, finding out all the goss on Kate Middleton’s morning sickness right from the hospital.

But some people apparently didn’t think it was so funny. The ACMA has received complaints overnight about the prank call to the King Edward VII Hospital in London, but they have been bounced them back to the station, noting that privacy provisions do not apply in this case.

An ACMA spokesperson has told radioinfo: “Under the co-regulatory model, code complaints should first go to the licensee. If a complainant is dissatisfied with the response, then a complaint can be made to the ACMA. The ‘privacy’ provisions of the Commercial Radio Codes of Practice apply to news and current affairs programs.”

Response to the prank went ballistic internationally when British newspapers picked up on this story. Some Brits were not amused by the colonials’ ignorance of royal protocol, which keeps things like this from happening back in Ol’ Blighty, where it was common practice to tap royal phones for newspaper scoops but not to have a bit of fun at the royals’ expense.

Mel pretended to be the queen and MC pretended to be Prince Charles. Even with their shockingly bad British accents, the nurse believed them, calling Mel Ma’am, and told them:

“She’s sleeping at the moment and she has had an uneventful night, she’s been given some fluids, she’s stable at the moment.  I would suggest that any time after 9 o clock will be suitable to visit… we’ll be getting her freshened up… Will went home at about 9 o clock last night.  She’s quite stable she hasn’t had any retching with me and she’s been sleeping on and off…”
