MEAA launches campaign objecting to ABC cuts

‘Hundreds of jobs have been lost.’

The Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) has launched a campaign in response to the Federal Budget handed down on Tuesday 8 May, which froze funding to the ABC for the next three years.

A statement via the MEAA website says ‘Hundreds of jobs have been lost and programming cut as a result of these deep cuts, making it difficult for the ABC to continue to fulfill its charter. Currently, 20 newsroom jobs around Australia are facing the axe.’

The union is urging people to contact Communications Minister Mitch Fifield ‘demanding that he stands up for the ABC’s independence from political interference and fights to protect it from any further funding cuts.’

As of midday today, 3985 messages have been sent to the Minister via the MEAA website.
