Merrick & Dools off Nova breakfast

After 10 years on Nova 969’s breakfast show, Merrick Watts, and current co-host Scott Dooley will move to another shift from next month. Merrick was poached from Triple J when Nova began, along with co-host Rosso, and producer Jen Oldershaw, driving the new commercial breakfast show quickly to number one in the Sydney market with a combination of music and breakfast comedy that sounded different from other formats at the time. A formal announcement about replacements will not be known until this Friday. National drive hosts Fitzy and Wippa have denied speculation that they will be moving to Nova’s Sydney breakfast shift.

The final Merrick & Dools Breakfast show will be broadcast live from the Opera Bar at the Sydney Opera House on Friday September 2nd.  Both Merrick & Dools “will remain as part of the Nova family.” Rosso left Nova last year, and since then the breakfast show has had three line-up changes within 12 months.

Merrick Watts says “it has been a fantastic 10 years doing breakfast at Nova.  Now I might not be the first person to bed at night!” Announcing his departure on air this morning Merrick thanked the listeners and his wife, saying “it has been a fantastic ride.”  Listen below to his announcement, along with a video highlights montage.

dmg Radio’s Group Program Director Paul Jackson thanked Merrick and Dools for the fantastic job they have done, “especially Merrick for the influence he has had on the success of Nova… Merrick’s voice was the first one heard on the station when Nova launched 10 years ago. His infectious passion and personality has played a key part in Nova 969’s growth and success since his first day on air.”

The station will announce the pair’s next move in the coming weeks, and the new Nova breakfast hosts will be revealed on air at 8am this Friday 26th August.
