Late in 2006, a letter from a listener, Jenny, introduced Adelaide’s Mix 102.3 Breakfast team to the amazing Karen Benyo.

Karen is a mother of 5 and somewhat of a super mum – always taking part in school committees, volunteering as a coach for her kids sporting teams and involving herself in fundraising efforts too.

Karen’s family had saved up enough money to landscape and revamp their yard for their 5 kids when Karen was tragically diagnosed with breast cancer in February of 2006.

As a result, all of the money that had been saved for their backyard overhaul went towards Karen’s treatment.

Her husband Paul was additionally forced to take time off work to look after her and the kids.

After hearing of the Benyo family’s misfortune from Jenny, Mix Fm felt compelled to help out in any way possible. As the family needed a new garden, Mix Fm – with the help of her husband Paul working incognito(!) – began work planning a new garden for the Benyo family.
