New licence condition imposed on 2UE

After last year’s unfavourable ABA finding against John Laws for breaches of 2UE’s sponsorship acknowledgment license condition, the Department of Communications has formally gazetted its intention to impose an additional license condition on the station.

The proposed condition requires 2UE to “monitor relevant program content” on the John Laws program using an “independent monitor” who must be approved by the ABA’s general manager.

The monitor must “make and retain a record of all relevant program content which is broadcast during the monitoring period” and report on relevant program content relating to the presenter’s third party contracts.

The independent monitor will be required to record “relevant program content during the period, commencing at least five minutes before and concluding at least five minutes after a sponsor is directly or indirectly identified by the presenter but does not include an advertisement.”

The station has until 27 February to make representations regarding the proposed condition.
