Newman Future Unclear

Sam Newman will meet Austereo management next week to discuss his future with Triple M Melbourne’s AFL commentary team.

The suspended Newman returns shortly from holidays and will sit down with Austereo’s Melbourne General Manager, Gary Pert.

According to The Herald Sun’s radio reporter, Glenn Mitchell, there is no certainty Newman will return to Triple M’s Saturday broadcast team, and will need to guarantee his commitment to the station’s AFL coverage.

Pert has told Mitchell: “There is absolutely no guarantee Sam will get his spot back.

“In essence, Sam’s future with the team is very much up in the air.

“When Sam returns, we want him to give a full commitment to the Triple M coverage and, if he is unable to do that, then his spot on the team would be seriously examined.

“We are more concerned with the quality of the Triple M broadcast than any one particular individual.”

Recently, Newman was suspended for at least three weeks. Management believed his ‘negativity’ towards football – as it is played today – was harming the station’s coverage.

Despite the suspension, Newman has still been presenting the Friday night and Saturday afternoon lead ins to Triple M game broadcasts.
