NFSA’s Sounds of Australia nominations now open

Sounds of Australia, the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA)’s annual capsule of iconic audio moments is back for 2024 and seeking recordings which have resonated deeply with communities and audiences across the country.

The songs, albums, audio memes, catchy advertising jingles, stirring speeches, immersive game soundtracks, sounds of nature that become part of this national soundtrack must be at least 10 years old.

Let’s go back to 2014.

The year of Ice Bucket Challenge, Snapchat and listening to an early taker of the podcast podcast phenomenon, Serial.

We were watching new shows like Love Child, Utopia, and The Real Housewives of Melbourne, and the end of the long running film review TV program The Movie Show with Margaret and David.

Music wise, there’s Sia’s Chandelier, triple j Hottest 100 No 1 for 2014 Chet Faker’s Talk is Cheap, Jessica Mauboy’s Never Be The Same, Hilltop Hoods’ Cosby Sweater and Peking Duk featuring Nicole Millar’s High.

2.7 billion views of Sia’s Chandelier featuring child dancer Maddie Ziegler.

Of course they don’t have to be from 2014. You can check out the sounds already included as part of the collection here.

And nominate a sound you think should be included here.

Before I leave you to reminisce on sounds of Australia past, here is a favourite The Movie Show review from Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton of the Bjork film Dancer in the Dark from 2000. My inclusion of an never forgotten moment from an iconic show.
