NIRS broadcasting live from Canberra

NIRS (National Indigenous Radio Service) will be broadcasting live from Canberra on Sunday the 27th of May to mark the 40th anniversary of Australians most successful referendum, and a defining event in our nations history.

The 1967 referendum saw more than 90% of eligible Australians vote yes to include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians in the national census of the population, and to give the Commonwealth Government power to make specific laws in respect to Indigenous people.

NIRS told radioinfo that to mark this occassion,Tiga Bayles will be joined by select broadcasting students from Cape York to present a very special two hours of live coverage from Old Parliament House in Canberra. The historic event is entitled ‘Their Spirit Still Shines’ and will feature the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition as well as the surviving members of the Federal Council for the Advancement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, who played a vital role in this historic referendum.
