Ayr in north Queensland is the winner of Triple J’s 2005 ‘One Night Stand’ competition, which is on tonight.
The contest gives small communities the opportunity to host a ‘dream gig’.
Last year’s winner was Natimuk in Victoria, where 9000 fans turned out to see Grinspoon, The Dissociatives and Eskimo Joe.
Triple J breakfast duo, Jay and the Doctor, will host tonight’s gig – The Hilltop Hoods, Shihad, End of Fashion and DJ Katalyst will perform.
Only communities with a population of less than 20 000 could enter the competition, with Adam McLaughlin of Ayr submitting the winning 2005 entry.
Triple J will broadcast the entire show live from Ayr across Australia from 6pm (AEST). Gates open at 4pm.
The entrants from Ayr organised a bunch of very supportive letters from the Mayor, local council and other community organisations.
They collected more than 4000 signatures in a town of only 8500, and created a brilliant photo scrapbook full of photos of Jay & The Doctor placed in highly compromised positions.
One photo featured the boys being eaten by a croc at the local crocodile park! Ayr put in a very good entry last year but, this year, Triple J says they have gone one better.
Highly commended entries were received from Charters Towers, QLD; Coonabarabran, NSW; Burnie, TAS; Esperance, WA; Broome, WA; Wangaratta, VIC; Coolamon, NSW; Henty, NSW.
