Old time station converting one listener at a time

A little AM narrowcaster in Newcastle is aiming to convert at least one new listener to its old time music format after hearing comments on the John Laws show this week.

A caller from Gunnedah asked Lawsy to play some more music from the 40s, 50s and 60s, but got short shrift from Golden Tonsils.

Ray Stuart, a volunteer presenter on the Newcastle based off-band station ‘Unforgettable Radio 1629’ heard the call and followed up with Golden Tonsils, also getting a short response. Ray is now seeking to find the original caller and convert him to 1629AM, where he will get all the old time music he wants.

An article in the Gunnedah newspaper, Namoi Valley Independent this week published an article seeking to find the caller

Radio1629AM is a privately owned radio station manned by volunteers “who give their time to keep everyone entertained with great easy listening music from the era of Big Bands through to Country, Swing, Old Time Dance music, Hollywood themes, and standards from the 40s through to the 60s with iconic evergreen favourites that we all grew up with,” according to Ray Stuart.

The narrowcast station is based in Newcastle but “the listening base is not just the Newcastle area, we have thousands of listeners throughout Australia including many in regional areas as well as international listeners who enjoy our unique music on the internet at Radio1629am.net.”

1629AM broadcasts 24/7 with volunteer presenters each with their unique music in an eclectic style that is absent from any other radio station in the country. The biggest issue, according to Ray Stuart, “is getting the message out to people that we exist and we can be accessed via the internet  so they can enjoy the music of their era and the music that played such an important part in their lives.”
