Like the story I heard about an announcer describing what was coming up in the news. Went something like this: “Coming up in the news a plane crash in XYZ. To take us there Joan Armatrading with Drop The Pilot”.
Interesting that you mention that the Car's song "Drive" was played. I remember being told years ago it was (possibly) about rape. If you read the words it could also be about a number of other issues including suicide, alcoholism.....
ABC Adelaide announcer Bob Caldicott told the story of the death of Martin Luther King ... he was on 5AN, made the announcement from the telex and grabbed a disc to play ... it was "Old Black Joe" ... to compound matters, the studio supervisor then rushed the telex into Ian Beattie who was on 5CL and said "Here's an announcement to read, but for Christ's sake don't do what Caldicott did and follow it with "Old Black Joe" ... Ian didn't, but was so beside himself at what Bob had done, he giggled all the way through the sad announcement ...
