‘Pirate’ comedian snares night gig on 96FM Perth

Perth radio has been stirred up again, this time with a subversive comedian worming his way into a job on 96fm.

Employees at Perth’s 96fm were “shocked” to hear locally bred stand-up comic, Werzel broadcasting on the night show between 7 and 10pm.

96fm Programme Director Brad McNally said: “we tried to stop this lunatic with pepper spray, but he took Steve Fitton hostage with a syringe full of drain cleaner…”

The audacity of Werzel’s actions has paid off, with McNally deciding to pair the interloper with existing nighttime announcer Wayne McClean, despite the new expense of McClean’s trauma counselling sessions.

“Spending three hours in a small room with a big, bearded guy who keeps threatening to take off his shirt is terrifying,” said the formerly easy going McLean. “It’s just like the nightmares I used to have about prison.”

Werzel will continue his exploits as a stand-up comedian with continuing appearances at Werzel’s Comedy Lounge, Thursday nights at The Hyde Park Hotel, as well as occasional theatre shows such as opening for “Weird Al” Yankovic at the Concert Hall.

Wayne & Werzel at night on 96fm “will deliver great music , interesting chat and lots of funny stuff, guaranteed to perplex the children and alienate old ladies who like the sleepy music.”

Programme Director Brad McNally said: “Wayne & Werzel really is something unheard of on Perth radio. We just might have stumbled onto something special…I only hope we can continue to get the stains out of the studio carpet.”
