ABA proposes changes to radio services in Cocos Islands

The Australian Broadcasting Authority is proposing to make additional channel capacity available on FM 105.3 at Home Island, Cocos Islands, for a community radio service.

Before reaching a final decision the ABA is interested in receiving comments on the proposal.

In August 1996, the ABA determined the licence area plan for Remote Western Australia.

The Voice of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands Inc. (VKW) has been operating on a temporary community broadcasting licence on FM 96.0 since September 2002. In November 2002, VKW submitted an application to the ABA requesting two frequencies, one on the West Island and a second on the Home Island, to adequately serve the Cocos Islands.

VKW is interested in obtaining a permananent community radio licence for the Cocos Islands.
