PM calls YES result an ‘exercise in respect, in love, in commitment’

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull spoke to mix94.5’s Clairsy, Matt & Kymba.

“Wasn’t it a great day!”

Reflecting on the frustration felt by a number of people over the cost of the postal vote – which the PM confirmed was just under $100 million of tax payers money – Kymba asked whether the Government should have just passed the law in the first place.

“Democracy has a cost, and what an amazing affirmation,” he responded.

“For same sex couples who have felt they have not been respected, to have an affirmation not just from Parliament but from their fellow Australians and in such huge numbers, this is an enormous exercise in respect, in love, in commitment.

“This is Australians standing up for a fair-go. It is very Australian.”

With 80% of Aussies casting their vote, a statistic that Mr Turnbull calls “remarkable,”  there is no denying the subject was one close to the hearts of the majority of the country.

“This shows you Australians really wanted to have their say,” he said.

With celebrations still ongoing throughout the state, the rest of the country and even across the world, Australia is now waiting for the bill to be approved by the Senate, something that the Prime Minister is confident will happen before the end of the year.

“This is a great day for democracy and respecting the will of the people, and what they’ve said is, ‘Get on with it and get it done!’

“I’m very confident it will get done before Christmas.”
