For example podcasts produced by AFR's such as "The Sure Thing" about insider trading is available on Apple and Spotify. These podcasts contain advertising. The AFR provides these podcasts for free without the requirement of a subscription to the publication.
However, podcasts dowloaded as mp3 files can have advertisements edited out.
Consequently regardless of the targeted market, will the sponsor's spending on podcast be a waste of money?
On the other hand, with recording of tv programs, the recorder's pause button or fast-forward/zap button bypasses the commercials.
That hasn't stopped advertising on tv.
Perhaps advertising in podcasts will continue.
