Radio Adelaide recognised in Media Excellence Awards

The South Australia Institute of Justice Studies has awarded a special commendation to Radio Adelaide program team The Aqueerium in their 2002 Awards for Media Excellence.

The feature documentary The Killing of Dr George was produced by the team in May 2002 to mark the 30th anniversary of the death of Adelaide University Law Lecturer Gr George Duncan in a gay hate crime which became the trigger for homosexual law reform in this state.

SA Attorney General Michael Atkinson made the presentation on Tuesday night at an awards dinner at the Festival Theatre. The program was praised for it’s historical significance and in particular for the inclusion of comment from people who had been gay activists at the time of Duncan’s death.

The documentary not only told the full story, but reviewed the impact of the event on the Adelaide community, particularly on gay and lesbian people. Younger speakers spoke of what they knew and believed about the event and gay hate crimes today.

The program concluded with on- site recordings from the unveiling of a memorial plaque on the banks of the River Torrens on May 10th.

The Killing of Dr George will be replayed on Radio Adelaide 101.5FM, Sunday December 8, 11am. Also available at www.radio.adelaide.edu

The Aqueerium broadcasts every Saturday morning on Radio Adelaide at 11am.
