Radio causes split in Coalition ranks

Liberal and National Party senators are at odds over proposed media reforms, ahead of the Senate Committee’s report into the changes expected some time this evening.

Two distinctly different views are held within Government ranks. The Nationals are insisting on mandatory local content rules, with six hours of daily “Live and Local” programming put forward as a benchmark, whilst the Liberals believe any conditions on programming would be too onerous and unworkable considering the extent of regional networking already in place.

Fairfax papers are reporting this morning that a compromise between senators is still possible and meetings will continue today ahead of the deadline.
